Kagan Cooperative Strategies

Kagan cooperative learning:- It offers a powerful alternative for language teaching—interaction. These Structures are instructional strategies designed to promote cooperation and communication in the classroom, boost students' confidence and retain their interest in classroom interaction.
Kagan strategies that I have used in classrooms are as follows:

1)  ASK AND SWITCH:- In this strategy students are asked to choose one partner and one of the partner is given the clue card along with the answer on it. Partner asks the question to their respective partner and told to switch the partner in 10 secs.

2) THINK-PAIR-SHARE:- It is a collaborative learning strategy where students work together to solve a problem or answer a question about an assigned reading. This strategy requires students to :-
(1) think individually about a topic or answer to a question; and
(2) share ideas with classmates. Discussing with a partner maximizes participation, focuses attention and engages students in comprehending the reading material.

3)YES OR NO:- In this strategy students are given 2 cards of different color. And one card represents yes and other card represents No. Then teachers asks questions and students have to show card if the answer is yes or no.

4)INSIDE AND OUTSIDE CIRCLE:- (Students rotate in concentric circles to face new partners for sharing, solving, quizzing.)

1. Put 2 groups together (inside and outside circles)
2. Questions or problems on flash cards and give to inside circle students
3. Inside asks while outside responds, inside listens, praises, or coaches (teacher can also ask the question and indicates whether inside or outside responds.)
4.Switch roles - outside asks while inside responds, outside listens, praises or coaches
5. Switch cards and inside or outside rotates.
